Well it’s certainly been a whirlwind few weeks for me in Esparreguera! From flying into the country less than 24 hours before starting work to teaching full classes after less than a week on the job, there hasn’t been a dull moment! I couldn’t have asked for a warmer welcome, though, and after an initial wave of new information and trying to settle into a new way of life, I feel like I’ve been here far longer than a month. In a good way!
Esparreguera reminds me of Durham, my home city in England, because it’s a beautiful, historic town with a noisy neighbour in the form of Barcelona, just like Newcastle back home! However, the weather is absolutely the opposite – it’s barely dipped below 30 degrees here, and there hasn’t been a drop of rain (until this week, Gee!). I can’t even imagine how my friends from home would react if it was 31 degrees in October. I’m sure it will continue cooling down, thankfully, and maybe it’ll feel like home when it does, but I’m loving it so far.
Teaching has been exciting – not least because every day is so different, as the saying goes. Between planning lessons, being with students and then helping manage the social media during office hours, time flies and no two days are even similar, let alone the same! Working in such a friendly and relaxed atmosphere makes tackling challenges and pushing ourselves and our students easier, and with the support of everyone at Elite all of us interns have settled in quickly. I can’t wait to see what happens at Halloween! Bring on the celebrations!

Bueno, ¡realmente las últimas semanas han sido un torbellino para mí en Esparreguera! Desde volar a este país menos de 24 horas antes de empezar en mi trabajo como profesor hasta el hacerme cargo de las clases menos de una semana después de haber llegado, no ha habido un solo momento de relax. No podría haber pedido una bienvenida más cálida y tras una auténtica oleada de nueva información y tras tratar de adaptarme a una nueva forma de vida, me siento como si llevase aquí mucho más que un mes.
Esparreguera me recuerda a Durham, mi ciudad natal de Inglaterra, porque es una ciudad bonita, histórica, con Barcelona cerca, una bulliciosa ciudad, igual que Newcastle en mi tierra. Sin embargo, el clima es absolutamente lo contrario – hasta ahora casi no ha bajado de los 30 grados y no ha caído ni una gota de lluvia (hasta esta semana, uff). No puedo ni imaginarme cómo reaccionarían mis amigos en Inglaterra si allí tuvieran 31 grados en octubre. Estoy seguro que la temperatura continuará bajando, afortunadamente, y tal vez me sienta aún más en casa cuando lo haga, pero por ahora me encanta.
Enseñar está siendo fantástico, no solo porque cada día es diferente, como se suele decir. Entre la preparación de clases, estar con los alumnos y ayudar con todo el tema de social media durante las horas de oficina, el tiempo vuela y no hay dos días iguales. Trabajar en un ambiente tan relajado y amigable hace más fácil aceptar los retos y mejorar , tanto nosotros como nuestros alumnos, y con el apoyo de todos los que forman Elite todos los “interns” nos hemos adaptado rápidamente. ¡No puedo esperar a ver lo que pasa en Halloween! ¡Que empiece la fiesta!
