Well hello, long time no see!
It’s been another busy month here in Esparreguera (just the way we like it) so I’m here to catch up with you all once again. Firstly, we’ve set up an Instagram account to share more of ELITE’s day-to-day activities, so be sure to follow @eliteformacio to see some great pictures and updates!
With the end of February came a week of beautifully warm weather, completely confusing us Brits! We made the most of it at the local fair in Esparreguera, and spent the weekend sampling local delicacies and watching the different parades and carreras in the town (see our March newsletter for evidence). As I write this, however, the clouds have once again returned to the sky and it seems that summer isn’t upon us quite yet!We aren’t letting that dampen our spirits, though, and the atmosphere at ELITE has remained sunny. No more so than with our kids’ and teenagers’ classes, who have all been making the most of our pen pal project!
As you might already know, the pen pal project is something that ELITE has been doing annually for a while now. Much like the intercambioswhich are so popular with expats in Spain, writing to a penpal in English – with them replying in Spanish – lets our students learn the language in a way that is so much fun it doesn’t even feel like school! This year our intern Sekani has been in charge, finding some schools in the USA to connect with, and he had this to say about the project so far:
“Running the project has been really enjoyable for me. It’s very rewarding to see the joy on the students’ faces when they are communicating with their friends from across the world, and their excitement when they receive a new letter. We all look forward to continuing with the project: it really helps our younger students to see that their English isn’t just for the classroom.”
In a modern world where almost all our communications are done electronically, there is something truly special and exciting about receiving a personal, handwritten letter from another continent! Beginning with Christmas, we explained and asked questions about everyone’s traditions and family celebrations, and we’re already planning what we’re going to share with them at Easter.
That isn’t to say that our project is only letter-writing, however. Just a couple of weeks ago our classes had the opportunity to talk to their penpals in person, through the magic of Skype, and asked eachother questions about their hobbies, favourite things, and even the differences betweenschool in America and Spain. We’ve also made powerpoints and videos to teach our penpals about different aspects of Spanish and Catalan culture. Our penpals have learnt about Carnaval, el día de San Valentín, and even our favourite traditional foods, and the students are so motivated and excited to receive responses and learn more about how these things work in the USA! This is just one more example of our different teaching methods here at ELITE, where we motivate our students by making learning fun and new. In fact, some of the boys have even shared their Fortnite usernames with their penpals, and are playing together with them at home!

¡Hola! ¡Hace tiempo que no contactamos!
Hemos tenido un mes muy ocupado aquí en Esparreguera, pero aquí estamos para poneros al día. En primer lugar, ahora tenemos un perfil de Instagram. En él estamos compartiendo algunas de las actividades diarias de ELITE: ¡seguid a @eliteformacio para ver algunas fotos y noticias muy interesantes!
Desde la última semana de febrero estamos teniendo un tiempo espléndido, y los británicos han estado totalmente confundidos. Aprovecharon el buen tiempo para visitar la Fira Passió de Esparreguera, y pasaron el fin de semana probando nuestra la comida y viendo los desfiles (puedes comprobarlo en nuestra última newsletter). Sin embargo, mientras Eilidh escribe este blog ve que el cielo vuelve a taparse (quizá el verano no está tan a la vuelta de la esquina) Pero no debemos dar rienda suelta a la tristeza, así que el ambiente en ELITE se ha mantenido soleado. Sobre todo en nuestras clases de niños y adolescentes, que han estado aprovechando nuestro proyecto de penpals.
Como ya sabéis, en ELITE llevamos haciendo el Pen Pal Project desde hace muchos años. Como los intercambios, que son tan populares con expats británicos en España, escribir cartas a un amigo en inglés (con él o ella respondiendo en castellano) significa que nuestros estudiantes pueden practicarel idioma en una manera más divertida y dinámica. Este año, Sekani ha sido el responsable del proyecto y nos ha “agermanado” con algunos colegios de los Estados Unidos.
Según Sekani, “Ser responsable del proyecto ha sido muy bonito para mí. Ver la felicidad en las caras de los estudiantes, cuando hablan con sus amigos de la otra parte del mundo, es muy gratificante, y me encanta ver su emoción cuando reciben una carta nueva. Todos tienen ganas de continuar con el proyecto: realmente les ayuda a entender que el inglés no es sólo para la clase.”
En un mundo moderno, donde casi todas nuestras comunicaciones ocurren de manera electrónica, hay algo muy especial y emocionante en recibir una carta personal, escrita a mano, de otro continente. En Navidad, hablamos sobre las tradiciones y celebraciones familiares, y ya estamos planificando Semana Santa.
Sin embargo, nuestro proyecto es mucho más que escribir cartas. Hace solo un par de semanas los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de hablar personalmente con sus amigos, a través de Skype, y les preguntaron sobre sus hobbies, cosas favoritas, y las diferencias entre las escuelas en España y los Estados Unidos. Además, hemos hecho PowerPoints y videos para enseñar a nuestros penpals aspectos diferentes de las culturas española y catalana. Los penpals han aprendido sobre el Carnaval, el día de San Valentín, y también sobre nuestras comidas tradicionales favoritas. Es genial ver que nuestros alumnos están muy motivados y tienen ganas de recibir respuestas y aprender más sobre estas cosas en los Estados Unidos. Este es un ejemplo más de nuestra metodologíoa aquí en ELITE, donde queremos motivar a nuestros estudiantes para hacer del aprendizaje algo divertido y nuevo. De hecho, algunos de los niños han compartido sus nombres de Fortnite con sus penpals, y ¡todos están jugando juntos en casa!
Después de todo, hemos tenido un gran éxito con el proyecto, y estamos muy motivados para ver cómo se desarrolla en los próximos meses.
